Psychotherapy in Frankfurt: how to find a therapy place
A therapy place in Frankfurt can be hard to find, but there are clear routes to one. This guide explains how the initial consultation and 116117 work, how long people wait in Hesse, which outpatient clinics and counselling centres the city has, and how to make good use of the waiting time.

How long is the wait for therapy in Frankfurt?
There is no current, officially published waiting time for Frankfurt alone. The best regional figures come from the waiting-time study of the German Federal Chamber of Psychotherapists (BPtK): in the state of Hesse, it took 5.4 weeks on average to get an appointment for the initial psychotherapeutic consultation, and 16.7 weeks, about four months, until the actual psychotherapy began. The national average was 19.9 weeks1. A survey by the Hesse Chamber of Psychotherapists painted a similar picture in the same year: about five and a half weeks to a first appointment and around four months to a therapy place2.

By comparison, Frankfurt is considered well supplied. An overview by the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences describes the city's situation as “comparatively good” and points out that the wait depends heavily on how many practices you contact7. Many practices have no receptionist, so expect answering machines, replies by email and fixed phone hours7.
How to get a therapy place in Frankfurt
The route is the same across Hesse and runs through statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung). You do not need a referral to get started4.
Book an initial consultationEvery course of psychotherapy starts with a psychotherapeutic consultation (psychotherapeutische Sprechstunde)5. You can call practices directly or use the appointment service: by phone at 116117 or online via the eTerminservice. The service must arrange a consultation within four weeks4. In Hesse, according to the regional association of statutory health insurance physicians, it took 15 days on average in 2019 from request to appointment3.
Keep the PTV 11 formAt the end of the consultation you receive a written recommendation (form PTV 11). If it says treatment is needed promptly, it includes a referral code. With it, 116117 can arrange acute treatment or probatory sessions56. The service cannot book a specific practice of your choice6.
Acute treatment when it is urgentAcute treatment covers up to 12 sessions of 50 minutes and does not need approval from your health insurer5. You should not have to wait more than two weeks for an appointment4.
Search for practices yourselfPractices that bill statutory insurance are listed in the search of the Hesse association of statutory health insurance physicians (arztsuchehessen.de); all licensed psychotherapists are listed in the search of the Hesse Chamber of Psychotherapists. You can filter by method and gender, and in the chamber's search also by language78. Write down every enquiry with date, time and the waiting time you were given. It keeps you organised and matters if you later apply for reimbursement9.
Ask university and training clinicsIn Frankfurt, the Center for Psychotherapy at Goethe University and training institutes also treat patients through statutory insurance. You will find them below under places to turn to. They often have waiting lists too, but it is worth asking.
Using waiting lists well: ask many at once and follow up
Calling one practice after another and waiting for each reply costs weeks. How long you wait depends heavily on how many practices you contact7. This approach works well:
Contact many practices at oncePick 10 to 15 practices from the KV and chamber searches and get in touch with all of them in the same week, not one after the other.
Catch the phone hoursMany practices have no receptionist and fixed phone hours, often with an answering machine7. Note the hours and call exactly then.
Get on the waiting listAsk whether there is a waiting list, roughly how long it is and how you should stay in touch. Put yourself on every list that seems realistic.
Ask about short-notice cancellationsSay that you are flexible and can step in at short notice when a slot frees up. People who are easy to reach often move up sooner.
Follow up politelyCheck in briefly every two to three weeks with the practices whose list you are on. It shows your request still stands.
Keep everything in one listPractice, date, time, answer and the waiting time you were given. It saves duplicate calls and is your evidence if you apply for reimbursement9.
What your voicemail could sound like
“Hello, my name is … I am insured with … and I am looking for a place for psychotherapy; it is about … I have already had an initial consultation (or: I am looking for a consultation appointment). I am flexible and can come at short notice. Please put me on your waiting list. You can reach me on … best at …” Many practices work in German, so a short message in German helps.
No place in sight? Reimbursement
If you cannot find a place with a practice that bills statutory insurance despite a thorough search, your insurer can pay for treatment in a private practice (Kostenerstattung under § 13(3) SGB V). The German Federal Chamber of Psychotherapists describes four steps9:
Get written confirmation in the consultation that psychotherapy is necessary and urgent.
Contact several practices that bill statutory insurance and document the refusals. If at least three to five say no, you may turn to a private practice.
Ask the private practice to confirm that it can start soon, and check that the therapist is qualified in an approved method (Fachkunde in einem Richtlinienverfahren).
Submit the reimbursement application to your insurer with the confirmation, the list of refusals and the private practice’s confirmation.
Insurers decide on each application individually, so talk to your insurer before treatment begins and, if in doubt, get help from a patient advice service.
Therapy in English and other languages
The search of the Hesse Chamber of Psychotherapists lets you filter for practices that offer therapy in a particular language78. The International Clinic of the Frankfurt Psychoanalytic Institute offers consultation and treatment with more than 20 professionals in languages including English, Farsi, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Russian and Spanish, and works with all German statutory health insurers. It currently states that it has no capacity for new English-speaking patients16.
